JENNIFER GOES THE DISTANCE TO HELP DOLPHINS

September 10, 2014 by Mark Palmer, Save Japan Dolphins
Beaverton, Oregon resident Jennifer Wolfsong is taking “running for a cause” to new levels this weekend.
Wolfsong, 45, will combine her love of distance running with her passion for stopping the Japanese dolphin slaughter by taking part in the Pine to Palm 100-mile Endurance Run on Saturday, September 13. Wolfsong is raising money for Save Japan Dolphins, a non-profit organization devoted to stopping the dolphin slaughter that takes place every year in Taiji, Japan, as illustrated in the Oscar Winning documentary, The Cove.
“It’s something that people really need to be aware of,” Wolfsong said. “I believe if enough people know about this brutal practice, we can change it.”
The Pine to Palm is a 100-mile race that starts in Williams, traverses the Siskiyou Mountain range and ends in Ashland. With just four miles of pavement and a more than 20,000 feet of climb, the race is a challenge for anyone. Runners have 34 hours to complete the race.
Wolfsong began training for the race this past November, working up to running 50-to-70 miles a week with particularly long runs on weekends. In May she ran a 50K race and did a 50 mile race in July.
“I’m really excited, but I’m also super nervous,” Wolfsong said. “I’ve done some really long distances in the past and have learned from my mistakes, but I’m not sure what to expect with this run. But I’m not kidding myself, I know pain will be involved.”
Wolfsong previously raised $3,000 for Save Japan Dolphins by running 100K in 2012.
From September to March, Taiji hunters herd dolphins into a small cove, capture the young ones to place in captivity and slaughter the rest.
